In the days when there was no alternative, amalgam or "silver" fillings were accepted and did an outstanding job. Where they have never performed well is in how they look. Our teeth are shades of white, so why would we choose to have shades of grey? Not only does an amalgam filling stand out, but it can discolour the whole tooth behind the enamel.
Luckily these days there is an alternative: white composite resin that matches your tooth colour exactly. This material is a little more expensive than amalgam but the benefit – retaining the appearance of your natural teeth – is priceless. At Foley Park Dental & Implant Centre in Kidderminster we use what we believe are the "gold standard" in composites – Heraeus Venus and GC G-aenial– which has exceptional performance qualities and durability and produces restorations that look exactly like your natural teeth.
We still use amalgam in new fillings but we use composite more often. Many of our patients with old amalgam fillings are coming in to have them replaced with white composite, for cosmetic reasons or because they are concerned about the safety of amalgam. We are guided by the British Dental Association, which states that amalgam is safe.
For large cavities and fillings there is another restorative option: a hard-wearing and long-lasting piece of tooth-coloured ceramic material that is designed to exactly fit your tooth, much like a crown.
There are two types: onlays, which are smaller than crowns but still quite extensive restorations involving one or more cusps (the pointy part on the biting surface of your teeth); and inlays, which are smaller again and do not involve the cusps.
By using an onlay to repair a broken tooth we are able to retain as much healthy tooth as possible. This imparts extra strength and helps prevent further fracturing. Inlays are used in smaller restorations, usually where strength and/or aesthetics are most important.
Inlays and onlays are very durable, even under high levels of stress, and they have outstanding aesthetic qualities.
